Manhood Academy

Our Manhood Academy mission is to challenge young men to overcome the difficulties of life by testing them in a tough environment.

The heart of Down Range, the Manhood Academy offers a small group setting for boys, teens and men to come together as a team and be mentally and physically challenged. Participants will learn to push themselves and their teammates to the limits. These challenges intentionally serve a much higher purpose than just physical tests. They exist to create an opportunity to teach wisdom and truth that is applicable to one’s daily challenges and within one’s spiritual journey.

Groups will be categorized in teams based on their specific season of life for a long-weekend mission that will help guide them along God’s path to manhood. Each group’s focus will be based on age-appropriate battles young men face, focusing on theme all men need.

2018 Camp Content

Choice

The caliber of a man is not determined by life circumstances, but rather how he chooses to respond to those circumstances.

Attitude

The beginning of every man’s personality is his attitude. Many fall into the trap of believing positivity is something you’re born with instead of realizing it’s an attitude anyone can own.

Character

At the center of every man, deep inside his heart and soul, lies what kind of man he wishes he was. A disciplined character is the bridge that takes a man from where he currently finds himself in life to where he longs to be.

Faith

Faith is what ultimately gives you confidence to live your life to the fullest. With that faith, you do not fear, in fact, the opposite of fear is not courage or bravery, but rather, faith.

Down Range Success Stories

“I learned how working together as a team can help you achieve what you never could alone. I had a fun time working with my team and team leaders. I was able to share my problems and thoughts with my leaders. At the end of the week, I found I could handle much bigger problems. I made great friends that I’m still in touch with.”

A Letter from CJ

Charge for Young Men:

We want to help equip you for anything life throws your way in the future. We utilize competition, military obstacles, target and tactical shooting as well as scenario-based paintball to create high-stress environments, giving you a chance to apply the concepts you’ll learn out here.

During Manhood Academy, humility, effort and a team-perspective will provide you the best opportunity to be an effective member of your squad. Contrary to this, pride, lack of effort and becoming and unteachable will make this experience especially difficult for both you and your squad. We hope that you are willing to challenge yourself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually – because if you do, you have the opportunity to change the course of your life! We look forward to spending the week with you.

Charge for Parents:

When most folks think of summer camp, they think of swimming, campfires and playing games all focused on the camper having fun. Camp Down Range was established for reasons quite different than the average summer program. We at Camp Down Range explain fun as “doing hard things well.” During the Manhood Academy, there will be challenging experiences that on paper appear to be zero fun; however, these activities are intentionally designed and in our experience, become the activities most talked about by these young men upon completion.

We believe that the most effective ways to learn life lessons and have the greatest impact on the mind and spirit are during times in life that are most painful or difficult. Your young man will walk, run, and carry heavy things. He will likely have scrapes or bruises from pushing himself outside his comfort zone and overcoming a difficult challenge even amidst the discomfort he was feeling at the time. With that being said, we do take safety very seriously due to the nature of our camp and work to provide an environment equipped for such activity. Our main concerns are hydration and basic first aid, both of which our staff is equipped to monitor with the support of our local EMTs.

We will equip your young men early on to understand our expectations for communicating any need they have throughout camp – that includes pre-planning for the day, self-care and maintenance. We will ensure your young man is safe, however we do allow controlled natural consequences to take place as opportunity for these young guys to learn to take ownership and responsibility for themselves.

Some examples of this include:

Pre-Planning: If he forgot something at the campsite that he was instructed to pack by his squad leader, he and a buddy will have to walk (run) to the campsite to retrieve, and as a result his team may have to pay a physical consequence, such as extra push-ups that session.

Self-Care: He and his team are instructed to apply bug spray and bug spray was provided, however, he chose not to – we will encourage, but not force this action to take place.

We care for your young men and desire to help change them from the inside out. Hard work, life lessons and team and staff camaraderie will provide this environment for a weekend of his summer – we look forward to serving your young man and equipping him for days, months and years down the road. Thank you for the opportunity to partner with you as we work to impact the next generation of men.
